Inbox - February 8, 2013

Welcome to this week's Inbox.  For those that have recently discovered us, Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  Here we go with what has caught our attention in this week's news ...

Glenlivet - Going local
The famous Speyside distillery of Glenlivet have teamed up with the leading lifestyle magazine Country Life to launch a new photographic competition - Natural Local Legacies. The goal is to uncover some of Britain's most stunning landscapes that have left a lasting legacy on local communities or the UK as a whole. They are asking for your 'natural legacies' that are hidden gems with meaning, beauty and heritage which hold particular significance to the photographer.

There will be four winning photographs, or 'legacies', with a further six runners-up.  These will be selected by a judging panel including the Editor of Country Life, Mark Hedges. The four winners will enjoy a local celebration courtesy of The Glenlivet, and a plaque to commemorate the lasting importance of their legacy. The winners and runners up will also receive a bottle of The Glenlivet 21 year old and The Glenlivet 18 year old respectively, and their legacies will be photographed by Country Life photographers, whose images will be exhibited in central London this Summer.

To share your 'legacy', and vote for others, visit The Glenlivet Land of Legacies at www.theglenlivet.com/guardians/legacies.  The deadline for entries is 1st April 2013.

Midleton - Legend to retire
It has been announced that a legend of the Irish whiskey industry is to retire. Barry Crockett is to leave his post as Master Distiller at the Midleton distillery in Cork, where brands such as Jameson, Power's and Redbreast are made.  He is being succeeded by Brian Notion, who has been training with Crockett for the last 10 years (both pictured, left).

Crockett has a rich history with Midleton - he was born in one of the cottages on the distillery and started working there at the age of 17.  His father Max Crockett was the Master Distiller and Barry succeeded him in 1981, creating such products as the Midleton Very Rare and overseeing the meteoric rise of the Jameson brand during his tenure.  In 2011, he also created the award-winning Single Pot Still range in which one of the releases carried his name.  He retires after 47 years service, 31 of which have been as Master Distiller.

Barry Crockett comments, "As I now step down from the position of Master Distiller I am struck by what an incredible honour it has been to oversee the wonder that is the Midleton Distillery. This is especially the case as the distillery is currently undergoing major investment. I am particularly happy to see my successor Brian Nation take on the role of Master Distiller. I know that with his guidance the future of the distillery will see the balance between the heritage of the distillery and the ongoing need to constantly evolve well secured."
