Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (May 5, 2017)

Welcome to Inbox.  For those new to WFE, Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  This is the news that has grabbed our attention this week ...


Douglas Laing & Co.
The independent bottler of Douglas Laing & Co have announced the latest limited edition whisky in their Remarkable Regional Malts series.  The Scallywag 13 years old is the first version of Scallywag, a blended malt made from Speyside single malts, to carry an age statement. It has been matured exclusively in ex-sherry butts and is released at 46% ABV. It is also non chill-filtered and of natural colour. No indication of the number of bottles was given in the press release but each will retail for £50. Scallywag 13 years old will be available in selected markets worldwide.

Rebel Yell

The American bourbon brand of Rebel Yell has announced the 2017 edition of its annual Single Barrel 10 years old bottling. The wheated bourbon, which is hand-bottled, is released at 100 Proof (50% ABV). There will be just 12,000 bottles available as a series of single barrels have been selected for the release.  It will be available in the USA only. Scotch Malt Whisky Society 

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society have joined up with a food futurologist and three food industry experts for a special event in London. The Flavour Fanatics Sensory Symposium takes places in Shoreditch next week (May 10) and features food futurologist Dr. Morgaine Gaye alongside coffee roaster Dumo Mathema, cheesemonger Ned Palmer and forager Fergus Drennan. The group will explore how flavour effects our experiences and perceptions of food, then attendees will then get to sample a set of SMWS whiskies alongside different products.

Teeling Whiskey Co. 
The Teeling Whiskey Company have announced a new series of limited edition Irish single malts and the first bottling in that series. The Brabazon Bottling is named after the Brabazon family who presided over the Liberties area of Dublin (where the Teeling distillery has been built) in the 16th to 19th centuries. The new series focuses on expanding the largely under developed Irish single malt category. 

The first expression - Brabazon Bottling Series 01 - has been matured in ex-sherry casks of differing ages, shapes and sizes. It has been bottled at 49.5% ABV and is non chill-filtered. There are just 12,500 bottles that will be available via selected specialist retailers, initially in Ireland but then in selected markets worldwide in due course. The recommended retail price is £69.
