Inbox - The Week's Whisky News (December 15, 2017)

Welcome to Inbox.  For those new to WFE, Inbox is our weekly round up of whisky news and PR material that has found its way in to our email inbox. It was created as we cannot write full articles or do justice to every piece received. It features items from around the world of whisky and is published by us each Friday.

Within Inbox we aim to write a few lines detailing each press release/piece of news/PR event that we have received and provide links, where possible, for you to find out further information.  This is the news that has grabbed our attention this week.

This will also be the last Inbox before the festive period and it will return in the New Year. We would like to thank all readers for the continued support in 2017.

Highland Park
The Highland Park distillery, which is located on the Orkney islands, have announced their latest limited edition single malt release - The Dark. The new bottling is inspired by the gloomy Autumn and Winter seasons on Orkney and will be followed by a second edition (The Light) in the Spring of 2018. This will celebrate the brighter Spring and Summer months. The Dark has been matured for 17 years in European oak ex-sherry casks and is bottled at the natural cask strength of 52.9% ABV.

The Dark is presented in a bespoke jet black glass bottle, which is embossed with a Viking serpent dragon that pulls on the Orkney's Nordic heritage. This is enclosed in a black oak cradle and is also accompanied with a booklet about the whisky and brand. The exact number of bottles in the limited edition is not revealed in the press release. The Dark will be available in selected specialist retailers worldwide and will cost £190 a bottle.

Kyrö
The Finnish distillery have announced the first ever release of their Single Malt Rye Whisky. The whisky, which is produced from 100% malted wholegrain rye and just over three years of age, has been matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Marsala wine casks. There are just 315 bottles and these have been bottled at 47.8% ABV. These bottles will be distributed sparsely in selected markets - roughly half will go to Finland with the remainder spread between Belgium, Germany, Japan, The Netherlands and the UK. A bottle of Kyrö Rye Batch #1 will cost £59.95, if you can find one.
